Russ Stephenson speaks in Brier Creek

On Saturday Raleigh City Councilor At-Large Russ Stephenson came to the picnic shelter at the Brier Creek Elementary School to speak with Brier Creek residents about his vision for Raleigh. He also took part in a lively 60 minute question and answer session where residents shared their concerns and knowledge about growth in the Brier Creek area. It was great to see so many people taking an interest in their neighborhood.

We had an excellent turnout. Thanks to all who came out and a special thanks to those who helped organize the event. I think everyone left feeling more informed(and I think they all enjoyed the ice cream too.)

Come to the Picnic shelter at the Brier Creek Elementary School/Community Center and get the "scoop" on issues facing Raleigh from City Councilor At-Large Russ Stephenson.

Voters in Raleigh will be electing a mayor and members of the City Council on October 6th. Come out, enjoy some free ice cream sundaes, and hear from Russ about the issues facing Raleigh and what he's doing to address them.

The public is invited and children are welcome.

New voter surge favors Democrats

"In Wake County, at least 11 precincts that went for Bush in 2004 appear to have gone for Obama this year. As the ballots of early voters are added to the precinct-by-precinct totals by elections officials in the coming weeks, even more of Wake County is likely to turn blue.

One such precinct votes at Brier Creek Community Center in northwest Raleigh, which voted heavily for Bush four years ago. On Tuesday, it went for Obama.

Beverly Vollat, who lives near Brier Creek Country Club, said she switched from Republican to Democrat when she and her husband relocated from Ohio in January.

Vollat she said she was turned off in recent years by the Republican Party's rhetoric, which she described as mean and counterproductive.

"It's like the old boys, they haven't kept up," said Vollat, 57. "It's a new world. We need to be looking for different ways of trying things."

In Obama, Vollat saw a candidate with the ability to handle challenges gracefully. "I love the man's temperament," she said."

Unite for Change tomorrow

The "Unite for Change" event in Brier Creek happens at noon on Saturday, June 28th.

We are meeting at:

Brier Creek Elementary School
9801 Brier Creek Parkway
Raleigh, NC 27617

I'll be in the parking lot around back. Look for some signs and the guy in the Obama shirt.

The Agenda:
12:00 - 12:30 p.m. - Welcome, idea sharing, and voter registration training.
12:30 - 2:00 p.m. - Voter registration

For those participating in the voter registration drive we'll be forming small teams of two or three people and heading out into the surrounding neighborhood. I'll be distributing forms, walk lists, and maps.

If you have a clip board please bring one. I have some, but not enough for the 20+ people who have RSVP'd.

Lastly, its going to be hot out tomorrow. I'll be bringing a case of water, but it wouldn't hurt to bring a little extra if you plan on walking door-to-door with us.

Unite for Change event

Saturday, June 28th, the Obama campaign is calling for a national day of action and is organizing hundreds of events across the country known as Unite for Change.

The Brier Creek Democrats will be hosting one of these events. An event page has been set up HERE for you to RSVP.

Details, including the exact meeting location, are still being worked out, but we will gather some where in the Brier Creek area and then go out and register voters. This is an activity that will help all our candidates from the top of the ticket, to Bev Purdue, Kay Hagan, and all the way on down.

I recognize some people are not comfortable going door-to-door, so if you have other ideas for things you'd like to do this day or any day, please let me know.

Feel free to invite your Democratic leaning friends and neighbors!

Finalized plans will be posted sometime next week.
